I already loved this book
I already loved this book. I had used it with kids when I was teaching. It's a fabulous, rollicking narrative in limericks of Peter Stuyvesant as first Director-General to the Dutch colony of New Netherlands- in today's terms he would be like the Mayor-Governor of New York. It is great for teaching kids New York history and they get a good idea of what life was like then. The rhyming adds to the fun and the story rolls along. Arnold Lobel did a great job on this book! Unfortunately it went out of print and all I could find was shabby copies at a high price. I ordered 2 of these for a and nice and a grand nephew. I was shocked that they were brand new and hard covered!Very happy with my 2 copies...

Why are books like this still being used?
This book is shamefully outdated. It is Wrong. Racist. Insensitive. Inaccurate. It should be removed from classrooms and libraries.Historians have been using multiple perspectives to teach young and older students about colonialism and the arrival of Europeans in this new world.Historians have and continue to find sources to show that the indigenous people have a different perspective- one that is not white man savior centered. It is time to rethink our comfortable lessons that depict the native peoples were helpless, childlike, dirty savages that were awaiting the arrival of the white saviors. This is simply not what happened. It is time to rethink how to teach history. To bring it to life, to teach the truth in history. Let’s find resources that represent accuracy, and refer to this book as a tool on how not to teach history.
